2-Minute Read
iS Clinical skincare is a professional skincare range founded in 2000 by Bryan Johns and Alec Call. The range follows a straightforward approach:
Cleanse → Treat → Hydrate → Protect
Some of its best-known products include Cleansing Complex, Active Serum, Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ and Hydra-Cool Serum.
The key is not to use as many products as possible. Start with your main concern, select an appropriate treatment, support hydration and the skin barrier where needed, and use sunscreen every morning.
In a Nutshell
- Choose your cleanser according to your skin type and tolerance.
- Choose treatment serums according to your main concern.
- Active Serum is primarily a resurfacing and clarifying treatment.
- Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ is a pure L-ascorbic acid vitamin C antioxidant serum for radiance, antioxidant protection and healthy-ageing support.
- Hydra-Cool Serum provides lightweight hydration.
- Brightening Serum and Brightening Complex target uneven tone in different formulations.
- The Youth range targets visible signs of ageing.
- Sunscreen remains essential, particularly when addressing pigmentation and photoageing.

What Is iS Clinical?
iS Clinical was founded in 2000 by Bryan Johns and Alec Call and has developed into an internationally distributed professional skincare brand.
Its approach centres on science-led skincare and clinically oriented formulations, with skincare organised around four core steps:
Cleanse → Treat → Hydrate → Protect
From a practical perspective, this framework makes skincare easier to understand. You don’t necessarily need numerous steps; what matters more is choosing products that are appropriate for your skin.
The iS Clinical Cleanse, Treat, Hydrate and Protect Approach
1. Cleanse
Remove sunscreen, makeup, excess oil and environmental debris without unnecessarily disrupting the skin barrier.
2. Treat
Choose targeted products according to concerns such as congestion, pigmentation, dullness, redness or signs of ageing.
3. Hydrate
Add hydration and moisturisation according to your skin type and barrier needs.
4. Protect
Use appropriate broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning.
Not everyone needs a separate product at every step, and using more products does not necessarily produce better results.
Which iS Clinical Products Should You Choose?
The iS Clinical skincare range covers several different skin concerns. This quick guide can help identify which products may be worth exploring before we look at the main categories in more detail.
| Skin concern or goal | iS Clinical products to consider |
|---|---|
| Oily, congested or blemish-prone skin | Cleansing Complex, Active Serum, Warming Honey Cleanser |
| Pigmentation and uneven tone | Brightening Serum, Brightening Complex, Active Serum |
| Dullness and antioxidant support | Pro-Heal Serum Advance+, Poly-Vitamin Serum |
| Proactive healthy ageing | Pro-Heal Serum Advance+, Active Serum, Youth Serum |
| Redness or sensitive skin | Pro-Heal Serum Advance+, Hydra-Cool Serum |
| Dry or dehydrated skin | Cream Cleanser, Hydra-Cool Serum, Moisturizing Complex |
| Fine lines and visible ageing | Pro-Heal Serum Advance+, Active Serum, Youth Serum, Youth Complex, Youth Intensive Crème, Firming Complex |
| Rough or uneven texture | Active Serum, Cleansing Complex Polish |
| Barrier support/post-procedure care | Sheald Recovery Balm |
| Eye area | C Eye Serum Advance+ |
| Sun protection | Eclipse SPF 50+ |
| Lips | Lip Protect SPF 35, Youth Lip Elixir |
This is a selection guide rather than a prescription. Skin concerns often overlap, and the same product may have a role in more than one type of routine.
Which iS Clinical Cleanser Should You Choose?
Your cleanser should suit your skin type and the rest of your routine. It does not need to treat every skin concern.
| iS Clinical cleanser | Best suited to | Why choose it? |
|---|---|---|
| Cleansing Complex | Normal, combination, oily, blemish-prone or congested skin | Lightweight everyday cleansing with mild resurfacing activity |
| Cream Cleanser | Dry, sensitive or easily irritated skin | Creamy cleansing with an emphasis on comfort and hydration |
| Cleansing Complex Polish | Rough, dull or uneven-textured skin | Combines cleansing with additional exfoliating action to help smooth texture |
| Warming Honey Cleanser | Oily, blemish-prone or congested skin | Honey-based cleanser useful when congestion and texture are priorities |
What About Exfoliating iS Clinical Cleansers?
Not everyone needs exfoliation at the cleansing step. Within the iS Clinical skincare range, the exfoliating cleansers differ in how they approach texture and congestion.
Cleansing Complex provides mild resurfacing alongside everyday cleansing, making it the more versatile option when gentle exfoliating activity is wanted.
Cleansing Complex Polish provides more deliberate exfoliation and is better suited when rough or uneven texture is a particular concern.
Warming Honey Cleanser combines cleansing with exfoliating activity and may be considered when blemishes, congestion and uneven texture are priorities.
If you already use Active Serum, retinoids, exfoliating acids or other resurfacing treatments, avoid automatically adding more exfoliation. Too much can increase dryness, irritation and barrier disruption.
Dermatologist’s Tip
With exfoliation, more is not necessarily better. Choose your cleanser according to the rest of your routine rather than trying to maximise the number of exfoliating products you use.
Which iS Clinical Serum Should You Choose?
The iS Clinical skincare range includes several serums, but they do not all serve the same purpose.
The easiest way to choose is to ask what you primarily want your serum to achieve.
| iS Clinical serum | Best suited to | Main role in the routine |
|---|---|---|
| Active Serum | Congestion, blemish-prone skin, enlarged-looking pores, uneven texture and fine lines | Resurfacing, clarifying and improving visible texture and tone |
| Brightening Serum | Pigmentation, dark marks and uneven tone | Targeted brightening and resurfacing |
| Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ | Dullness, uneven tone, proactive healthy ageing, mature, sensitive, redness-prone or blemish-prone skin | Pure L-ascorbic acid vitamin C antioxidant serum for radiance, antioxidant protection and visible signs of ageing |
| Hydra-Cool Serum | Dehydrated, sensitive or blemish-prone skin | Lightweight hydration and soothing support |
| Poly-Vitamin Serum | Dehydration, dullness and visible ageing | Vitamin-rich hydrating and conditioning support |
| Youth Serum | Fine lines, wrinkles and visible ageing | Targeted healthy-ageing serum |
| C Eye Serum Advance+ | Fine lines and visible ageing around the eyes | L-ascorbic acid antioxidant treatment for the eye area |
You do not need several products simply because they are all called serums.
For example, Active Serum, Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ and Hydra-Cool Serum perform very different roles: resurfacing, antioxidant protection and hydration respectively.
What Is iS Clinical Active Serum?
Active Serum is one of the best-known products in the range and is particularly useful to consider when several concerns overlap.
Its resurfacing and brightening ingredients make it relevant when concerns include:
- Congestion
- Enlarged-looking pores
- Uneven texture
- Dullness
- Uneven-looking tone
- Fine lines

Does Active Serum Treat Acne?
Active Serum may have a useful role within an acne-prone skincare routine, particularly when congestion and uneven texture coexist.
However, a cosmetic serum does not replace appropriate acne treatment.
Moderate-to-severe inflammatory acne, nodulocystic acne, persistent acne or acne causing scarring warrants appropriate medical assessment and may require prescription treatment.
What Is iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum Advance+?
Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ is a facial antioxidant serum formulated with pure vitamin C in the form of L-ascorbic acid, alongside vitamin E, vitamin A and additional antioxidant ingredients.
Importantly, it is not only a serum for people with redness or sensitive skin.
It can be considered when the goals include:
- Antioxidant protection
- Brighter, more radiant-looking skin
- Dull or uneven-looking skin
- Proactive healthy-ageing skincare
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Sensitive or redness-prone skin
- Blemish-prone skin
Someone who simply wants to introduce a vitamin C antioxidant serum for radiance and proactive healthy-ageing support can therefore consider Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ even if they do not have acne, redness or sensitive skin.
A simple morning routine could be:
Cleanser → Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ → Hydration/Moisturiser if needed → Sunscreen
View Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ →
Active Serum vs Pro-Heal Serum Advance+
These are not simply two alternatives for the same concern.
| Active Serum | Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ |
|---|---|
| Resurfacing and clarifying treatment | Vitamin C antioxidant treatment |
| Best when congestion, pores and uneven texture are priorities | Best when antioxidant protection, radiance and proactive healthy ageing are priorities |
| Also targets uneven-looking tone and fine lines | Also supports brighter-looking skin and visible signs of ageing |
| Provides exfoliating/resurfacing activity | Contains pure L-ascorbic acid vitamin C |
| Particularly useful for congested or blemish-prone skin | Can also suit sensitive, redness-prone or blemish-prone skin when appropriate |
Active Serum therefore makes more sense when resurfacing, congestion and texture are priorities, while Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ makes more sense when the priority is daily antioxidant support, radiance and proactive healthy ageing.
The best choice still depends on your overall routine, skin concerns and tolerance.
iS Clinical Skincare for Pigmentation
Within the locally available range, Brightening Serum and Brightening Complex are the two most targeted pigmentation options, while Active Serum may also have a role when uneven texture and tone coexist.
Brightening Serum vs Brightening Complex
| Brightening Serum | Brightening Complex |
|---|---|
| Lightweight serum | Creamier corrective treatment |
| More exfoliation-focused | Provides greater moisturising support |
| Contains alpha-arbutin | Contains alpha-arbutin |
| Useful when pigmentation and texture coexist | Useful when uneven tone accompanies dryness or dehydration |
| Fits into the serum/treatment step | Can combine corrective and moisturising roles |
Brightening Serum is a hydroquinone-free brightening serum combining alpha-arbutin with additional ingredients targeting uneven-looking tone and texture.
Brightening Complex provides a creamier alternative for uneven tone with additional moisturising support.

Dermatologist’s Note on Pigmentation
Not all pigmentation is the same. Dark marks and patches on the skin can have different causes, including melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and sun-related pigmentation. Because the cause can differ, the most appropriate treatment can differ too.
Brightening Serum and Brightening Complex may help improve the appearance of pigmentation and uneven skin tone, but persistent, worsening or unexplained pigmentation should be assessed to determine the cause and guide treatment.
Hydra-Cool Serum vs Moisturizing Complex
Both support hydration, but they occupy different places in a routine.
| Hydra-Cool Serum | Moisturizing Complex |
|---|---|
| Lightweight serum | Moisturising cream |
| Provides water-based hydration | Provides hydration with greater emollient support |
| Easy to layer | Better when a moisturiser is required |
| Particularly useful for oily/dehydrated skin | Better suited to normal, dry or dehydrated skin needing a cream |
| Can be layered underneath moisturiser | Usually occupies the moisturising step |
This distinction matters because oily skin can still be dehydrated.
Someone with oily but dehydrated skin may prefer Hydra-Cool Serum, while dry skin may benefit from the additional moisturising support of Moisturizing Complex. Some people may benefit from using both.
Which iS Clinical Youth Product Should You Choose?
The healthy-ageing category contains several products, so the choice should be based on your main concern, skin type and preferred texture.
| Product | Best suited to | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Youth Serum | Fine lines and visible ageing | Lightweight targeted serum |
| Youth Complex | Multiple visible signs of ageing | Broader healthy-ageing treatment |
| Youth Intensive Crème | Visible ageing accompanied by greater dryness | Richer healthy-ageing moisturising treatment |
| Firming Complex | Loss of firmness and visible skin laxity | Targeted firming and age-supportive treatment |
Age alone should not determine which product you choose.
Someone who wants to be proactive about visible skin ageing may start with antioxidant protection such as Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ and daily sunscreen rather than assuming they immediately need several products from the Youth range.
Someone with oily skin and early fine lines may also not need the same texture or degree of moisturisation as someone with mature, dry skin.
What About Sheald Recovery Balm?
Sheald Recovery Balm occupies a different role from the corrective serums.
Sheald Recovery Balm provides rich, protective and soothing support for dry, sensitive or compromised skin and may also be used as part of appropriate post-procedure skincare.
Post-procedure skincare should nevertheless be tailored to the procedure performed. A product suitable after one treatment is not automatically appropriate immediately after every peel, laser or resurfacing procedure.
Don’t Forget Sun Protection
No iS Clinical skincare routine addressing pigmentation, photoageing or post-inflammatory marks is complete without appropriate photoprotection.
Eclipse SPF 50+ provides a high-SPF option within the locally available iS Clinical range.
For pigmentation disorders such as melasma, sunscreen selection may require additional consideration of visible-light protection, particularly in darker skin tones.
How to Build an iS Clinical Skincare Routine
An iS Clinical skincare routine does not need to contain many products. Start with your main skin concern, select an appropriate treatment, add hydration where needed and use sunscreen every morning.
| Skin concern or goal | Morning routine | Evening routine |
|---|---|---|
| Oily, congested or blemish-prone skin | Cleansing Complex → Hydra-Cool Serum if needed → Sunscreen | Cleansing Complex → Active Serum as tolerated → Hydration if needed |
| Pigmentation or uneven tone | Cleanser → Brightening Serum or Brightening Complex → Sunscreen | Cleanser → Brightening treatment → Moisturiser if needed |
| Dullness, radiance or proactive healthy ageing | Cleanser → Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ → Hydration/Moisturiser if needed → Sunscreen | Cleanser → Appropriate treatment → Moisturiser |
| Dry or dehydrated skin | Cream Cleanser → Hydra-Cool Serum → Moisturizing Complex if needed → Sunscreen | Cream Cleanser → Appropriate treatment → Hydra-Cool Serum and/or Moisturizing Complex |
| Sensitive or redness-prone skin | Cream Cleanser → Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ if tolerated → Hydration → Sunscreen | Cream Cleanser → Hydra-Cool Serum → Moisturiser or barrier support if needed |
| Fine lines and visible ageing | Cleanser → Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ → Moisturiser if needed → Sunscreen | Cleanser → Selected treatment serum → Youth product according to skin needs |
Keep Your Routine Individualised
These are example routines rather than prescriptions. You do not need every product listed, and some active products may need to be introduced gradually according to your skin’s tolerance.
If you use prescription retinoids, acne treatments, pigmentation treatments or other exfoliating products, your iS Clinical routine should be adjusted accordingly.
Do You Need an Entire iS Clinical Routine?
No.
You can use an iS Clinical cleanser with another brand’s serum, or an iS Clinical treatment with a moisturiser or sunscreen from another range.
Skin responds to ingredients, formulation, tolerability and whether a product is appropriate for the underlying concern—not whether every product comes from the same brand.
A thoughtfully constructed mixed-brand routine can therefore be just as appropriate as a routine made entirely from iS Clinical products.
Dermatologist’s Perspective
What I like about iS Clinical skincare is that many products occupy quite specific roles, making it possible to build a targeted routine without necessarily using many products.
Active Serum is particularly interesting when texture, congestion and uneven tone overlap.
Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ has a broader role than simply being a serum for sensitive or redness-prone skin. As an L-ascorbic acid antioxidant serum, it can also be considered when the goals are radiance, antioxidant protection and proactive healthy ageing.
Hydra-Cool Serum, meanwhile, provides lightweight hydration for skin that may not require a heavier moisturiser.
For pigmentation, Brightening Serum and Brightening Complex provide different options, but I would still start by asking what is causing the pigmentation.
Similarly, skincare can support the management of acne, rosacea, melasma and other dermatological conditions, but it does not replace appropriate diagnosis and medical treatment when these are required.
The best iS Clinical skincare routine is therefore not necessarily the one containing the most products. It is the one in which each product has a reason to be there.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is iS Clinical medical-grade skincare?
“Medical-grade skincare” is not a formal regulatory classification in the same way that prescription medicines are classified. iS Clinical is better described as a professional or cosmeceutical skincare range used in dermatology and aesthetic settings.
What is the best iS Clinical product?
There is no single best product for everyone. Active Serum may be useful when congestion, texture and uneven tone overlap; Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ is a vitamin C antioxidant option for radiance and healthy-ageing support, while Hydra-Cool Serum primarily provides lightweight hydration.
Which iS Clinical serum contains pure vitamin C?
Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ contains pure vitamin C in the form of L-ascorbic acid. C Eye Serum Advance+ also uses L-ascorbic acid but is specifically formulated for the eye area.
Can I use Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ if I don’t have redness or acne?
Yes. Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ is not limited to redness, sensitive or blemish-prone skin. It can also be considered by someone looking for antioxidant protection, improved radiance and proactive support against visible skin ageing.
Can I use iS Clinical Active Serum every day?
Frequency should depend on skin tolerance and the rest of your routine. Because Active Serum provides resurfacing activity, take particular care when combining it with retinoids, exfoliating acids or other potentially irritating treatments.
Can iS Clinical skincare help pigmentation?
Brightening Serum, Brightening Complex and selected other products may improve the appearance of pigmentation and uneven skin tone. Persistent pigmentation should still be correctly assessed, particularly when conditions such as melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation are suspected.
Is iS Clinical suitable for acne-prone skin?
Several products may suit acne-prone skin, particularly Cleansing Complex and Active Serum. However, skincare does not replace appropriate medical treatment for moderate, severe, persistent or scarring acne.
Active Serum or Pro-Heal Serum Advance+?
Choose according to your main goal. Active Serum is more appropriate when resurfacing, congestion and texture are priorities. Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ is more appropriate when antioxidant protection, radiance and proactive healthy ageing are priorities.
Can I use Hydra-Cool Serum with Active Serum?
Yes, when appropriate for your skin. Active Serum provides corrective/resurfacing activity, while Hydra-Cool Serum provides hydration. Sensitive skin may need Active Serum introduced more gradually.
Can I mix iS Clinical with other skincare brands?
Yes. Compatibility, formulation, tolerability and the overall combination of active ingredients matter more than whether every product comes from the same brand.
